There is an increasing academic and clinical interest in Schema Therapy, which
emphasizes the impact of parent-child interactions during childhood on later life. This
interest also includes the studies conducted on the intergenerational transmission of
schemas in the past decade. One of the fundamental assumptions behind these studies is
the assumption that the parental behaviors of the parents, who have the biggest influence
on the formation of the child’s schemas, are also influenced by their own schemas. The
findings of the studies with different sample sizes and characteristics examined in this
study provide significant evidence for the intergenerational transmission of schemas.
The growing inclusion of various variables that may be influential in this transmission
in research designs indicates the need for an increasingly more detailed and in-depth
study of the subject. It is believed that investigating the intergenerational transmission of
schemas with longitudinal and qualitative patterns will help fix the shortcomings in the
field.
