In this study, Ibn Ajurrum’s life, teachers, students, scientific personality, works, the
grammar school he adopted and scientific studies about him are discussed. His real name
is Abu Abd Allah Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Ajurrûm (d. 723/1323), who is Dawud
es-Sanhadji, is an Arabic grammar and qiraat scholar who was born in Morocco in 672
(1273-74). Ibn Ajurrum, who gained fame with his concise syntax text Al-Muqaddimah
al-Ajurrumiyyah, but whose works are mainly about qiraat, is also knowledgeable in
disciplines such as fiqh and mathematics. In his works on qiraat, there are a lot of explanations
about etymology, syntax, and morphology. It has been claimed that he belonged to
the Kufa school of grammar as a syntax school, especially because he used some syntax
concepts specific to the Kufa school of grammar in his Al-Muqaddimah al-Ajurrumiyyah.
However, it has been revealed that Ibn Ajurrum, in his work Farâid al-Ma‘ani, which he
wrote about qiraat, mostly used the concepts of the Basra school of grammar, adopted the
views of this school, and although he used the concepts of the Kufa language school, he
largely adopted the Basra school of grammar.
