Abstract

Many psychopathologies included in the DSM are associated with emotion regulation
problems. Although most studies focus on negative emotion regulation difficulties,
positive emotion regulation difficulties are also associated with many disorders. In this
study, the sociodemographic characteristics of the Turkish sample in relation to negative
and positive emotion regulation difficulties and the effect of emotion regulation difficulties
on depression, anxiety and stress symptoms were examined. A total of 509 people, 373
women and 136 men between the ages of 18-76 participated in the study. A form including
basic sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, education level, perceived income
status and marital status, Perth Emotion Regulation Competency Inventory (PERCI)
and Depression-Anxiety-Stress-21 Scale were applied. According to the results, it was
determined that sociodemographic variables, except for education, created differences in
emotion regulation difficulties subscales; PERCI subscales were found to be effective on
depression, anxiety and stress. The findings are guiding for other studies to be conducted
in the field of treatment or in transdiagnostic examinations.
