The courtyards within the islamic world have been analysed by numerous architects and researchers during the twentieth century. Next to Ottoman examples, courtyards of Andalusia, North Africa and Middle East dominate the courtyard literature while Seljukid examples are hard to find. This essay constitutes an analysis of the Seljukid courtyards by investigating the cultural identity of the Seljuks as well as the development of the Turkish Islamic identity and political power of the Seljuks, which influenced the architectural examples gaining on complexity and representation. Basing on the necessity of monumentality, the implementation of the royal four-eyvan-scheme to the mosques is explained.Downloads
