Abstract

“Chelengk”, which is a Turkish word, is used differently in this study than its common meaning. This study examines this object, which was used as an award for almost two centuries, by looking at the questions of what it is, how it is produced, how it looks like, and why and to whom it was given. Chelengk, which could be perceived as the eastern counterpart of the western medal, was awarded as a material gift particularly to soldiers, commanders, and some foreigners who had served for the Ottoman Empire. The use of Chelengk, which was produced from gold and various jewelry in several forms, had its peak in the 18th century and was ended in the first quarter of the 19th century. This study sheds light on the history of çelenk, as a particular Ottoman (or Eastern) military and diplomacy award, by drawing on Ottoman archive documents and some other primary Ottoman sources
