The Sinop Raid, which took place on November 30, 1853, had a wide impact in the
world in terms of military, political and most of all, humanitarian aspects. In the struggle
between two unequal powers that took place with the sudden attack of the Russian navy,
the Ottoman side faced thousands of martyrs, hundreds of wounded and captured, and
millions of liras worth of material damage. The battle simultaneously contained cruelty
and heroism, and this situation was the subject of thousands of news items, especially in
the British press. This study, which examines the Sinop Raid through British newspapers,
which are the first-hand sources of the period, reveals previously undisclosed details of
the raid, evaluates the British and world perspectives on the Turks, and aims to reveal
how the events that would change the course of the Crimean War were sparked off by the
raid and how they were fanned by the press.
