This study aimed to conduct a traditional review of studies that examine the personality
tendencies of both perpetrators and victims of partner-perpetrated physical violence
in romantic relationships. For this purpose, research published between 2010 and 2024
were scanned with the determined keywords of (“Partner Abuse” OR “Physical Violence”)
AND (Personality) AND (“Romantic Relationships” OR “İntimate Partnership”),
(“Fiziksel Şiddet”) AND (Kişilik) AND (“Romantik İlişkiler”) on “Science Direct”,
“Google Scholar,” “Medline,” “PubMed,” “Scopus,” and “Web of Science” databases.
Twenty-seven studies were included in this review as a result of this scanning. Examination
of these studies revealed that it was generally and consistently demonstrated that
psychopathy was positively related to intimate partner violence perpetration, whereas
anxious attachment was positively associated with both physical violence perpetration
and victimization. It was also observed that the diversity of studies on the relationship
between trans-diagnostic pathological/healthy personality features and intimate partner
violence has recently begun to increase. However, since each research study generally addressed
a different feature, the number of research studies per disposition is very limited.
It is recommended that the number of future studies be increased by focusing on certain
basic trans-diagnostic pathological/healthy personality traits such as emotion regulation,
cognitive flexibility etc.
