Muḥarram Afandī al-Zīlī and His Work on the Science of al-Naḥw Hâşiye ‘ale’l-Fevâʾidi’z-zıyâʾiyye

Muḥarram Afandī was one of the prominent Ottoman scholars of the 10th/16th century.
He was born in 910/1504 in the Zīla district of Tokat and likely passed away there
sometime after 1010/1601. Many commentaries (al-sharḥs) have been written on al-Kāfiyah,
famous on Arabic syntax by Ibn al-Ḥājib, one of the most esteemed figures in Arabic
linguistics. Among the most famous of these is al-Fawāʼid al-Ḍiyāʼīyah, authored by
ʻAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jāmī. Muḥarram Afandī authored a supercommentary (al-ḥāshiyah)
on this work, titled Ḥāshiyah ʿalā al-Fawāʼid al-Ḍiyāʼīyah. In his work, Muḥarram Afandī
placed significant emphasis on grammatical analysis (iʿrāb), incorporating numerous
syntactic interpretations while employing clear and accessible language. In this regard,
the present study focuses on his work Ḥāshiyah ʿalā al-Fawāʼid al-Ḍiyāʼīyah. It first
provides a brief introduction to the text, followed by an examination of its sources, manuscript
copies, stylistic features, and methodological approach.
