An Etymological Essay on an Animal’s Name in Chagatai Turkish

This article analyzes an animal’s name from Molla Muhammad Timur’s Chagatai translation of Kalila wa Dimnah, and discusses its pronunciation, meaning and origin. The word in question was not encountered in this form in other sources before. The word appears in the manuscript as “ ” . From the perspective of phonetics and the meaning of the word, the article discusses possible readings as “kafaçanak” and “fakaçanak,” and concludes that the word should take its place in dictionaries as “fakaçanak”.
