While some scholars describe all antinomian dervish groups as Qalandari, other scholars oppose this perspective because of its essentialist characteristics. Also, most scholars classify dervish groups as Orthodox (Sunni) or Heterodox (Non-Sunni) and analyze dervish communities in terms of Sunnism. In this article, I will argue that treating dervish communities as a single group is problematic since there had been dervish communities with different lifestyles and different mystical experiences. Also, classifying dervish communities as Sunni or non-Sunni was not substantial since interaction and exchanges existed between antinomian dervish communities and Orthodox Sufi groups in the Middle Ages.Downloads
