“The Commentary on ‘Na’t’ Written by Itrî”

Buhûrîzâde Mustafa Itrî Efendi (ö.1711?) has a groundbreaking reputation in Turkish Classical Music with his compositions which exceeds the centuries. Although the sources indicate that Itri Efendi was a successful poet, we do not have a Divan, including his poems can be found in some of the collection of biographies and periodicals in a disconnected way. The fact that it is not confirmed which poems belong to him among his compositions and there exists another poet called Itri makes it difficult to examine his poems. Hence, we would like to examine his only na’t (a poem written to praise Prophet Mohammed) which is certain to have been written and composed by him. Itri’s literary and Sufi identity will be evaluated in this work. This work establishes a new fact that the anonymous composition called “Şem-i ruhuna cismimi pervâne düşürdüm (My body is a moth revolving around the candle of your soul)” belongs to Itri. This fact is a contribution to the Itri year activities declared by UNESCO in 2012.
