Abstract

Mehmed Galib Bey is one of the governors of Sultan Abdülhamid II. When dismissed
after the Young Turk Revolution, he came to reside in his mansion in Üsküdar. Mehmed
Galib Bey’s mansion upon Uzunçayır became a place where musical entertainment was
performed. His close friend and publisher, Ebüzziya Tevfik Bey, enriched the mansion
with his accounts on press and culture. Leyla Saz Hanım, one of the prominent female
poets of the period, also participated in the musical performance. In this study, the cultural
and musical gatherings held in Mehmed Galib Bey’s mansion in Üsküdar Uzunçayır were
examined. The study aims to reveal the contributions of these gatherings to the cultural
and musical life of Üsküdar. Also, the biography of Mehmed Galib Bey, the cultural
environment in which he was involved, the history of the mansion upon Uzunçayır and
the biographies of the guests are treated. The primary source of the study is the serials
published in the early Republican period by Reşid Halid Gönç, one of the mansion’s
residents. The biographies of the mansion’s residents and guests are revealed through
secondary sources.
