In the years of the Balkan Wars and the subsequent World War I, the number of the orphans in the Ottoman lands dramatically increased. For these unattended children Daruleytam’s (orphanages) had been opened beginning from 1914. This article primarily deals with how and why these orphanages were opened, and then recounts the stories of the children who were residing in them. Unlike the existing literature that focuses on the institutional history, these children were made visible through telling their short stories.Downloads
