The cultural and religious awakening that occurred in the Kazakh steppe between the years of 1742 and 1917 was one of the most important periods in Kazakh history, but there are profound differences among Kazakh intellectuals about the nature and significance of that reform process. In some studies, this process is defined as the “Islamization” of Kazakhs by Tatars. This movement led by the Tatars, includes the creation of an Islamic identity but also creation of a national identity. The origins of the Kazakh Islamic awakening were constructed in the 18th century, but it began to grew in the second half of the 19th century and made its major breakthrough in the 20th century.
